If you’re interested in creating online courses to build a steady stream of passive income…
Read this.
I’ve created multiple digital products.
I’ve sold over 24,000 copies of my digital products.
I’ve generated thousands of dollars in revenue.
So today I’ll share a simple 3-step process for creating online courses:
The key to this is to have a clear system.
With this system, you can:
- Decide on which course to create
- Outline the course
- Start creating it
Unfortunately, most people are extremely messy when it comes to creating courses.
And what’s worse, they don’t realize that…
Creating courses isn’t about teaching everything you know as much as knowing what NOT to teach in it.
Here are the most common mistakes I see when people create courses:
- Lack of clear benefit
- Absence of worksheets
- Overwhelming amount of information
- Failure to break the course into short videos
- Adding everything you know into one course
The key to overcoming these challenges is to have a system.
Here’s mine:
Step 1: Choose a Topic
There are four criteria for choosing a topic:
- The topic aligns with your expertise.
- The topic solves a problem for your audience.
- You’ve been consistently posting about this topic.
- There’s demand for the problem you can solve.
If the topic meets these four criteria, then it’s decided.
That’s a topic you can explore.
Step 2: Outline Your Course
Once you have chosen a topic, outline your course.
This will help you organize your thoughts and ensure that your course is valuable.
Your outline should include:
- The main topic or theme of your course
- The key concepts or steps that you will cover
- And short notes about what you want to say
Also, decide on the worksheets and other materials you might include.
That said, as you outline the course, you’ll notice that it’ll keep getting longer and longer.
So what can you do?
1/ Decide what to leave out.
or
2/ Pick one of the sub-topics and make the course about it.
Here’s an example of what an outline might look like for an online course:

Step 3: Create Your Content
Many people overcomplicate this.
So what I do is…
- Open a Google Slides presentation.
- Add all the titles to individual slides.
- List the ideas I want to cover as bullet points.
Once I’m done with that, I give myself permission to move things around and create a bad first draft.
When I’m done with this, I send the document to a designer who will make it look pretty.
Then I record myself explaining the concepts of the presentation with ScreenFlow or Descript.
Regardless of the type of content you create, ensure that it is of high quality, valuable, and easy to understand.
And more importantly, that the audio is clear.
Finally, split your video into manageable chunks.
This will make it easier for your audience to digest the information and will help them retain what they’ve learned.
(Bonus) Step 4: Sell Your Course
The final step in creating an online course is to market and sell it.
Here are some steps you can take:
- Choose the main benefit you want to highlight (what’s the #1 thing buyers will be able to achieve?)
- Create a sales page that highlights the benefits of your course and includes testimonials or social proof.
- Use Twitter to promote your course and engage with your audience.
- Offer a limited-time discount or bonus to encourage people to buy.
Remember…
The key to successfully selling an online course is to provide value to your audience and clearly communicate the benefits of your course.
