Forget everything you’ve heard about pitching your services in the DMs.
I’m here to hit you with some prime knowledge on how NEVER mess up when you’re trying get new business online.
And trust me, this is gonna be juicy.
To start…
Check out this masterpiece I got in my inbox today:
I got it after tweeting this typo-infused gem:
Mark Cuban bought a plane online for $40,000,000 million dollars.

His motivation?
Save time.
And you can’t buy $100 course to shave a few hours of research?
Time is your most valuable asset.
I don’t know about you…
But that’s like a masterclass in how to NEVER score clients.
So, let me give you with 5 tips to not be “that guy” (or gal) in the DMs:
Numero 1: Never play whack-a-mole with your clients’ egos
Seriously…
Don’t go smackin’ your potential clients’ self-esteem around like a ragdoll.
Nobody wants to work with someone who treats them like they’re in a Mortal Kombat fatality scene.
Use your DM powers for good, not evil.
So instead of saying:
“I found 3 mistakes in your posts”…
Try saying :
“I read your recent posts about TOPIC. Great post, especially that part about IDEA. Did notice a couple of typos, though. Ever thought about hiring a spellchecker?”
Numero 2: Always give them a way out
People aren’t fans of feeling like they’re trapped.
So just give them an escape route.
Add this on the end of your DM:
“If not, feel free to ignore my message. But if it sounds interesting, I’d like to chat more.”
The full message would look like this:
“I read your recent posts about TOPIC. Great post, especially that part about IDEA. Did notice a couple of typos, though. Ever thought about hiring a spellchecker? If not, feel free to ignore my message. But if it sounds interesting, I’d like to chat more.”
Numero 3: Viciously Follow up
Don’t just fade away like a bad memory.
If you’re not hearing back from your potential client, even after giving them a way out…
Follow up and show them how you can be of service.
But avoid follow-up messages like:
- “Bumping this up”
- “Checking in!”
- “Following up”
- “You there?”
- “Hey”
Instead, show how you helped your past clients:
“I recently helped a client with GOAL. I’m pretty sure I could do the same for you. Wanna chat about it?”
Numero 4: Offer value upfront
Provide value to your prospects.
For example, here’s what I would’ve done if I were dingus who DMed me earlier to day…
I’d say something like this:
“Hey Jose, That’s a funny post. Got a real LOL from it. I did noticed a few typos, though. Do you use Quillbot to spellcheck? They’re great tools. Here’s a short video on how to use it. LINK.”
That said, there’s a smarter way to provide value:
It’s hitting them with a case study.
Add this one to your follow-up text lineup:
“Just wrote a short case study on how I help client with GOAL. Here’s a link to read it. If you like what you see, let’s have a quick brainstorm session. Sounds good?”
This is also a surefire way to keep the conversation going.
Numero 5: Create an SOPs
Now, you might be wondering…
“What in the name of the Mark Zuckerberg is an SOP?”
Well, it’s a Standard Operating Procedure, my friend.
Imagine it as the tutorial of your dreams, but for your team’s tasks.
The true essence of an SOP is found in its step-by-step guidance.
So, gather up those precious DM messages, toss in some examples, and add in some scripts to create your DM Outreach SOP.
So make sure to add your collection of DM messages, examples, and scripts in your DM Outreach SOP.
And you know what?
As soon as those dollars start rolling in, don’t hesitate to delegate that outreach to someone else.
Your next steps…
